All the ossicles, including those projecting externally, are covered by the epidermal layer. Some are thought to assist in defence, while others aid in feeding or in the removal of organisms attempting to settle on the starfish's surface. These serve a respiratory function. This arrangement enables both easy flexion of the arms by the starfish and the rapid onset of stiffness and rigidity required for actions performed under stress. Water enters the system through the madreporite, a porous, often conspicuous, sieve- like ossicle on the aboral surface. It is linked through a stone canal, often lined with calcareous material, to a ring canal around the mouth opening. A set of radial canals leads off this; one radial canal runs along the ambulacral groove in each arm. There are short lateral canals branching off alternately to either side of the radial canal, each ending in an ampulla. These bulb- shaped organs are joined to tube feet (podia) on the exterior of the animal by short linking canals that pass through ossicles in the ambulacral groove. There are usually two rows of tube feet but in some species, the lateral canals are alternately long and short and there appear to be four rows. The interior of the whole canal system is lined with cilia. These extend to contact the substrate. Although the tube feet resemble suction cups in appearance, the gripping action is a function of adhesive chemicals rather than suction. The tube feet latch on to surfaces and move in a wave, with one arm section attaching to the surface as another releases. Other starfish turn up the tips of their arms while moving which gives maximum exposure of the sensory tube feet and the eyespot to external stimuli. The sand star (Luidia foliolata) can travel at a speed of 2. The water vascular system serves to transport oxygen from, and carbon dioxide to, the tube feet and also nutrients from the gut to the muscles involved in locomotion. Fluid movement is bidirectional and initiated by cilia. Oxygen is transferred from these to the coelomic fluid, which acts as the transport medium for gasses. The cardiac stomach is glandular and pouched, and is supported by ligaments attached to ossicles in the arms so it can be pulled back into position after it has been everted. The pyloric stomach has two extensions into each arm: the pyloric caeca. These are elongated, branched hollow tubes that are lined by a series of glands, which secrete digestive enzymes and absorb nutrients from the food. A short intestine and rectum run from the pyloric stomach to open at a small anus at the apex of the aboral surface of the disc. Shell valves and other inedible materials are ejected through their mouths. The semi- digested fluid is passed into their pyloric stomachs and caeca where digestion continues and absorption ensues. When the prey is a clam or other bivalve, the starfish pulls with its tube feet to separate the two valves slightly, and inserts a small section of its stomach, which releases enzymes to digest the prey. The stomach and the partially digested prey are later retracted into the disc. Here the food is passed on to the pyloric stomach, which always remains inside the disc. The retraction and contraction of the cardiac stomach is activated by a neuropeptide known as NGFFYamide. Their diets include clams and oysters, arthropods, small fish and gastropod molluscs. Some starfish are not pure carnivores, supplementing their diets with algae or organic detritus. Some of these species are grazers, but others trap food particles from the water in sticky mucus strands that are swept towards the mouth along ciliated grooves. Starfish have no distinct excretory organs; waste ammonia is removed by diffusion through the tube feet and papulae. These cells engulf waste material, and eventually migrate to the tips of the papulae, where a portion of body wall is nipped off and ejected into the surrounding water. Some waste may also be excreted by the pyloric glands and voided with the faeces. Although some species can tolerate relatively low salinity, the lack of an osmoregulation system probably explains why starfish are not found in fresh water or even in many estuarine environments. The tube feet, spines and pedicellariae are sensitive to touch. The tube feet, especially those at the tips of the rays, are also sensitive to chemicals, enabling the starfish to detect odour sources such as food. There are eyespots at the ends of the arms, each one made of 8. Many starfish also possess individual photoreceptor cells in other parts of their bodies and respond to light even when their eyespots are covered. The peripheral nerve system consists of two nerve nets: a sensory system in the epidermis and a motor system in the lining of the coelomic cavity. Neurons passing through the dermis connect the two. Life was impossible, losing weight seemed impossible. I can do so much! I am looking forward to continuing to lose weight and seeing all the new ways my body can move. Feeling so much better! Thanks Belviq : ). First time I have gone to get anything. Last year at this time I wore a size 2. Today I bought a size 1. I am one proud, sassy Lady! Don't get discouraged.. Just think if I had given up that first month I would still be in a size 2. Only one more size to go to be in what I always wore! Now my happiness comes from being active with my children. I am no longer sad or depressed and I actually like the mirror! My combination was Belviq, tracking my daily calories 1. Lose it app and a little exercise. I was pushing a size 2. I started and today I bought a pair of 2. Looks like I'll be going down to a 1. I've lost 2. 5 total. I'm out of the 1. I am down 4. 0#s in 6 months, my Aic went from 6. He took me off metformin. I am down 3. 2 pounds!!!!!! I took the half dose of Phen only a few times a week with Belviq every day and lost 1. If I take the 1. 8. Phen alone, my BP goes crazy high along with increased heart rate - taking it with Belviq keeps both in the normal range - consistently. THAT is why the combo is the ticket to Disneyland! She was able to get a script from her doc right away. She pays $7. 5. 0. She has lost 3. 5lbs. She is so happy. She is also 7. After 1. 8+ months on Belviq. I am off statins too. Before starting Belviq, I was taking 4. I now take 1. 0 mg of fluoxetine, 4. Belviq, and no problems. This morning I decided to step on the scale. So, here's to the next 8. My A1c has been 5. Tested twice. I have lost almost 3. This is a miracle drug for me. I have some clothes that are loose. I am loosing inches as well. We can and will do this jut one day at a time. I have since gone on to lose 1. The really good news is that my blood pressure is in good control and so my cardiologist had me discontinue my BP med. So I decided to try the Same shirt as when I started B! I needed a Few big alterations lol!! It's like a dress now. Excellent responder! Almost 1. 1 months about 1. Believe it works!!! I decided to go ahead and weigh myself before buying the month supply. I'm so excited to say I have lost 1. My Journey continues i want to lose 8. My brother- in- law who tried it has lost 9% of his body weight in 4 months and he can't exercise because he needs to schedule another back surgery and just lays around most of the time. I started my Belviq healthy eating journey blind. I knew nothing about eating right. I had never dieted in my life. I have always had up and down weight issues but would get stressed out and lose it and then eventually gain it back. With menopause came more weight and frankly I hated how I looked but was never prompted to try to lose until I had an ear infection and went to the Dr and they said my bp was 1. They even thought I may have had a mild heart attack.. I was immediately put on bp meds but they didn't lower my bp but to the 1. And I ate whatever I wanted to eat and ever how much I wanted. I was a gravy and butter fanatic! My second love was salt and lots of it. I drank at least 6 cokes a day, usually more. Coke and the rare juice and very sweet tea was all I ever drank. Most of my foods were fried. That is all I knew to eat and cook. Fried chicken, fried potatoes, fried okra, fried , fried mushrooms, fried corn.. I ate tons of sugar on everything! Cereal that was already sweet even got added sugar! I would indulge in desserts every day, usually twice a day and I ate all night. I never exercised. What the hell was exercise??? I still have a hard time doing it but i am trying. I promised.. Thus began my quest to where I am now. I did not even know the lingo coming here. I thought health food was for stoned hippies. I really did.. I thought the whole eating real food was a phase. I had NO idea what coconut oil was, quinoa, hemp seed, I had no idea what high carb meant, or low carb, or any carb for that matter. I had studied up on Belviq and knew what to expect from it but I also got that I had to do my part.. Now I just had to find . After my aunt died I read some info from The Cruise Control diet and low and behold the dude explained a lot of this diet stuff to me in a language I could understand! I was on- board but still had as bunch to learn. He told me cokes were really bad to drink. I started weaning myself off them. I hated water!!! But I found if I put a sprinkle of my sugar- stevia mix in it with lemon juice I could do it! I later deleted the sugar totally and now love water. I don't drink cokes anymore. When I have tried they taste nasty. I gave up my beloved potatoes and my beloved .. I really noticed some loss doing that. I quit eating cereal and started eating eggs. I do not eat any processed food. If it is in a package I don't want it. I sincerely hate the taste of packaged foods now that I have learned to cook healthy. I only want REAL food now. I make cauliflower rice stir fry, Turkey burgers, fresh chicken lime soup.. I eat the weirdest things now. But I love it! I exercise too but I will admit I started that late in the game. I hate traditional exercise do my new go to ones are hula hoop, tap dancing, and using the stability ball. Belviq has been my best friend and stood beside me as I reworked my brain and body to succeed. Belviq works if YOU work! I just want people to know that if I can do this anyone can. I started at below zero.. I was in a size 2. I know what obesity looks and feels like. I never want to go back there. He considered dropping it all together but decided it was beneficial for my (repaired) congenital heart defect. BP was 1. 17/6. 2. My doctors are very supportive. For me Belviq has been a game changer. It has helped me with my sugar and coca cola addictions. It has given me back power. My starting weight was 4. Life was impossible, losing weight seemed impossible. I can do so much! I am looking forward to continuing to lose weight and seeing all the new ways my body can move. Right now I notice while the scale has slowed, my inches are coming off. I have lost almost 4 pant sizes. Lost 7. 0 lbs. 9. Hoping to hit 1. 00 by the end of April! Total lost 2. 32 pounds. I was my doctor's first test case. He was so pleased he said he is going to talk to his sister about taking it. I can pull my old jeans up and down while zipped and buttoned! So proud of myself! I think I've forgotten just how big I had gotten. July 3. 0 thanks to belviq and a LOT of hard work. You get out of it what you put in. This motivates me more to lose the last 1. Starting weight 2. This drug is helping me conquer a problem that I have struggled with my entire adult life. I am walking 3. 0- 4. The only side effect that I think I have experienced is an increased sexual drive or maybe it's because I'm just excited about the weight loss. As of today I weigh 1. B is a mood lifter for me. |
